We have been receiving a number of inquiries regarding products made of pumpkins lately and I personally felt that we, as a company, needed to start increasing the farming & sourcing capacity of pumpkins so that there won't be any lack of raw materials compared to the continuous increasing demand.
Indonesia is rich in agricultural resources (well, not limited to agricultural stuff only) and we have handled a handful already, and pumpkin is one of them. It's nothing new to us, but just to keep up with the current demand and forecasting the upcoming prospects, we have initiated a new project, targeting to expand the pumpkin farming population throughout Java island.
The place we visited was the area called Lamongan. It's about 2 hours drive from Seed Origin factory and we left the factory at around 10 AM, but with the rough road conditions in the remote countryside of Lamongan, we ended up arriving at around 12:30 PM. The journey we took looks something like the map below.
The road condition was so bad when we were nearing the destination. The concrete roads were all cracked and they seemed to have been struck with an earthquake or something. Below is what they look like, although you have to be there to really feel the bumps!
We went on the speed of around 10 km / hour'ish. But I have to admit that the view was stunning. I have been around many places in Java, but each place has its unique atmosphere and its own beauty. Below is some of the views I would like to share with you.
This might sound crazy, but I am totally in love with this kind of adventurous journey, and as in any kind of journey, the destination is indeed rewarding, but stories you build to get there is no second best! Anyways, we got to there we needed to go and met the people we needed to meet. Below is what we were after!
Oh by the way, all those barren farm lands you saw above, they are going to be filled with pumpkins in the next 3 months and will be sent to Seed Origin upon harvest!
We checked out a few more farmlands and discussed about farming a specific breed of pumpkins because we are keen on expanding the Kabocha vareity in Indonesia - just because they taste better than Pana Merah / Hibrida breeds, which are common in Indonesia. Our conclusion so far is that it will be possible to expand Kabocha breeds, enough to be used in mass production scale, by the middle of 2020.
I will keep you all posted with newest information on Indonesian sweet potatoes and pumpkins :)
